Remotely Manage Servers and Workstations
DameWare Development, DameWare NT Utilities
Several Windows & .NET Magazine readers wrote in to nominate
DameWare Development's DameWare NT Utilities (DNTU) as a top
product. Phillip Potter of Nashville says, "I swear by DNTU.
It's the best tool I have in my bag of tricks." Paul Smith of
Billerica, Massachusetts, says, "I was looking for a tool that
would let me have remoteand admin capabilities, and DNTU
fit the bill. We haven't looked back since we installed it and
have replaced other software products in favor of DNTU."
DNTU is an enterprise systems
management application for Windows 2003/XP/2000/NT systems
that provides an integrated collection of NT administration
utilities for remotely managing Windows servers and
workstations. DNTU 4.0 contains an Active Directory (AD)
browser view for AD implementations and a Network Browser
view, which displays domains in a network explorer treeview.
You can easily add or remove AD sites from the AD site list.
You can also add NT domains to the Favorite Domains section of
the Network Browser view. Pricing is $289 for a single-user
license, $829 for a 3-user license, $2319 for a 10-user
license, and $10,119 for a 50-user license.

Editor's Choice: Training Winner:
DameWare Development, DameWare NT Utilities
by James Carrion
December 2002
The computer classroom can be, at
times, difficult to manage: multiple students simultaneously
working on a lab exercise, all demanding the instructor?s
attention and guidance. It's nice to have a technology tool to
help manage this environment, which can serve as a virtual
teacher's assistance.
DameWare NT Utilities is a versatile
management program that allows you to control and manage
network computers remotely. It centralizes, in one interface,
all the major diagnostic and management functions that would
normally require many different native operating system
utilities, as well as other third-party utilities, to
replicate. Don't let the program's title throw you; DameWare
for NT utilities is also optimized to work on Windows
2000.
What I really like about DameWare is
that you don't have to preinstall client software on the
remote computer. Instead, the client agent is installed
automatically when needed. As a traveling instructor, this
gives me the flexibility to walk into a new classroom and take
"control" of it immediately. I can then interact with
individual student computers and check up on how a student's
doing on a lab exercise. It supports all the major Windows
platforms.
DameWare really shines in centralizing
all the essential information you need to diagnose a remote
computer problem, as well as consolidating all the major
utilities for maintaining the remote system. It also provides
more detail than Task Manager ever could. Factor in that
native remote management of Windows 95/98 in Win2K is
non-existent, and you can see that DameWare is a tool that can
really do it all.
I?m sure that DameWare was designed
with the helpdesk in mind, but it can be used as a
technology-training tool, as well. Technology instructors,
especially those who travel, will find that DameWare can serve
as a virtual teacher?s assistant and help bring an unruly
computer classroom back into order. Its extensive remote
diagnostic and management capabilities provide you a wealth of
information you?d be hard-pressed to replicate with native
utilities.

Remotely Manage Systems
DameWare Development, DameWare NT Utilities
Several readers wrote in about DameWare
Development's DameWare NT Utilities (DNTU). The system management application
provides an integrated collection of Windows NT administration
utilities that incorporate a centralized interface to let you
remotely manage Windows XP, Windows 2000, and Windows NT workstations and servers. The software includes all the
standard XP, Win2K, and NT server utilities and the Win2K and
NT workstation utilities, along with DameWare custom NT tools.
Andy Owen of Spherion, United Kingdom, said of DNTU, "As a
central console for supporting our Win2K and NT organization,
it's perfect." Jack Campbell of Atlanta, said that DNTU is a
great utility to consolidate all your NT tools in one place.
He also said, "My team has ceased to use any of the standard administrative tools
because DNTU does it all."
One feature that most readers mentioned is DNTU's Mini
Remote Control feature, DameWare Development's remote control
application that's included with the main DNTU application.
The Mini Remote Control feature remotely installs its client
agent server service on remote machines so that when
administrators need to take control of a remote machine in the
field, they can do so without having to physically go to the
remote box and install the remote control server portion of
the program. And, a reboot of the remote machine isn't necessary.
